The present jar appear to be hand-modelled and beatened into shape, as evident from the tool marks to the interior of the vessel. Cold painted in red and white on the exterior, the geometric scrolled designs contrasts beautifully with the grey pottery body. The fragility of the cold-painted pigment suggests that these vessels were probably not destined for everyday use, and may have been reserved for ceremonial or burial purposes.

Such jars are typical of the Mongolian culture during the Neolithic period. A number of similar painted vessels from the Xiajiadian culture were excavated from the Dadianzi site in the Aohan Banner in Inner Mongolia. Other examples discovered from the Liaohe River Civilisation are also known.

Compare two similar black pottery examples, one recorded in Tracing the source of the Liaohe River Civilization. The formative period of Chinese civilization, Beijing, 2011, p. 187; and another from K.Y. Ng, illustrated in Ronald W. Longsdorf, The Pottery Age: An Appreciation of Neolithic Ceramics from China, Circa 7000 BC - Circa 1000 BC, Hong Kong, 2020, p. 246, fig. 2.
