Grading this albumen print on a scale of 1 to 10 – a 10 being a print with deep brown dark tones and cream-toned highlights that retain all of their original detail – this print rates a strong 8. The photograph is somewhat lighter at the edges. Comparison with published illustrations of other prints of this image suggest that the print’s tonality is uniformly somewhat light in these areas.
This print is in generally very good condition. Upon close examination, the following are visible:tiny deposits of retouching, likely original, in the lower right corner; a few tiny raised areas in the lower right portion of the image, possibly a result of the mounting process; a few horizontal, ½-inch sharp creases at the left edge and in the left portion of the image; two crescent-shaped sharp creases, one at the upper left edge and one in the lower right portion of the image which correspond to repairs made on the reverse of the mount; a few scattered hairline scratches, which do not appear to break the emulsion; and some very faint silvering in the darkest areas. None of the aforementioned detract from the overall fine appearance of this print.
The mount has been conserved, and a treatment report is available upon request. There are losses at the upper left, center right, and lower right edges. There are expertly-repaired tears at the corners and edges, and there is moderate edge wear. There is some very faint soiling overall.
On the reverse, [indiscernible] ‘autograph’; ‘JMC’; ‘301525’; and ‘21/-’ are written in pencil in an unidentified hand. There is a large droplet of indeterminate in the upper left corner, and there are scattered tiny rust-colored deposits overall. The reverse is soiled.
