With its ferocious head, strong body and powerful claws, this bronze tiger is dynamically modelled as if about to jump. It may have been originally used as the finial on top of a bronze drum, chunyu. One related example, a slightly larger bronze crouching tiger, with its head turning to the left, its body incised with spiral motifs all over, and without the apertures between its claws, formerly in the Frank Arts Collection, Belgium, is published in The Frank Arts Collection of Ancient Chinese Bronzes, Hong Kong, 2011, cat. no. 11.
