The ducks are preserved in general good condition, with extensive traces of original pigments. Minor flaking and chips to the bases. The points where one leg joins to the base and main body have been stabilized on each duck. One duck with a small loss to one foot, and the other duck with a small loss near the tail. Both overall with general consolidation to the joineries and surface wear, consistent with age.

整體品相良好,見大量殘留原始彩繪。座見少許磕及小失。兩隻腿部均 經重新粘接。一鴨腳部見一處小失,另一隻尾部附近見一小失。兩隻均 見加固及表面磨損,與年代相符。

Naturalistically rendered figures of ducks appear in the Ming dynasty in a range of media, but it is extremely rare to find a pair carved from wood, preserved in such good condition with extensive traces of original pigments. The modeling closely relates to examples found in cloisonné enamel. See a single incense burner in the form of a mandarin duck from the Qing Court Collection, preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 76. See also a cloisonné enamel ‘mandarin duck’ incense burner from the Speelman Collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 3rd April 2018, lot 3448.
