'Winter, Yosemite Valley' (Half Dome, Apple Orchard, Winter, Yosemite)

gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's San Francisco studio label (BMFA Label 4), with typed title and '16.', on the reverse, framed, circa 1935

image: 7 by 9 in. (17.8 by 22.9 cm.)

frame: 18¾ by 20¾ in. (47.6 by 52.7 cm.)

Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings.

This photograph is in generally excellent condition. The mount is lightly soiled. There is edge and corner wear, including a one-inch sharp crease at the upper left corner. There are a few stray red crayon marks on the mount.

The reverse is soiled. The removal of old adhesive remnants has peeled away the upper paper layer of the mount to reveal the brown underlayer in a few areas. There are old tape remnants at the side and lower edges. 'AA/2149' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand.

Karen Haas and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of label 4: 1936 to 1944.
