Ansel Adams

1902 - 1984

Unicorn Peak, Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park

gelatin silver print, the photographer's studio stamp (BMFA 2) and a Michael and Jeanne Adams collection stamp on the reverse, framed, circa 1946, probably printed in the late 1940s; accompanied by a certificate of provenance, signed by Michael and Jeanne Adams (2)

image: 7¾ by 9½ in. (19.7 by 24.1 cm.)

frame: 16 by 20 in. (50.8 by 40.6 cm.)

Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings.

This print is in generally excellent condition. There is a 3/4-inch linear impression at the center right. There are several diagonal creases in the upper right corner and the emulsion appears to be broken. The faintest silvering is visible around the edges. The thin black margin edges and corners are worn.

On the reverse are fingerprints and soiling. There are reproduction notations in pencil and red crayon. The following are written in unidentified hands in pencil and ink on the reverse: '#55' (twice); 'Unicorn, Tuolumne'; '10' wide'; 'MJA0621'; and 'AA/1889.'

When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 2 on the reverse of the mount: about 1930 to 1960.
