'Trees, Castle Rock, California'

gelatin silver print, mounted to Crescent illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 5, 6, and 10), titled and dated in ink, on the reverse, framed, circa 1960, probably printed between 1962 and 1963

image: 10⅝ by 13½ in. (27 by 34.3 cm.)

frame: 20⅞ by 25 in. (53 by 63.5 cm.)

Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings.

This print is in generally excellent condition. The following are visible in raking light: a 1/2-inch linear impression near the left edge; and a few miniscule chips to the upper and lower edges.

On the mount are scattered pinpoint-sized impressions along the upper edge. An overmat has been adhered to the mat. The corners and edges of the overmat are worn. The edges are slightly age-darkened at the corners.

The reverse of the mount has edge and corner wear. '30 [circled]' and 'AA/1740' are written in pencil in unidentified hands.

Karen Haas and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6: from 1962 to 1963.
