'Rapids, Merced River, Yosemite Valley, Calif.'

gelatin silver print, mounted to Hi-Art illustration board, signed in pencil on the mount, annotated ‘Rapids Merced River’ in ink and with the photographer's Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1955, probably printed between 1963 and 1970

image: 9 by 7¼ in. (22.9 by 18.4 cm.)

frame: 22¼ by 20⅝ in. (56.5 by 52.4 cm.)

Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings.

This print is in generally excellent condition. There is a nearly imperceptible deposit of retouching in the upper center. The mount is darkened in a thin band at the periphery of the image. There are 2 circular abraded areas with adjacent adhesive remnants in the upper corners, suggesting this photograph was previously overmatted.

There are 5 adhesive remnants along the edges on the reverse. The following are written in unidentified hands in ink and pencil: '14'; 'FIG#15852'; '372'; and 'AA/2288.'

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of the mount: about 1963 to 1970.
