This extraordinary still life by Franz Xaver Petter celebrates several varieties of flowers, insects, and fruits, including a still-wet pineapple, positioned at the edge of the entablature on which the entire arrangement sits. The pineapple was considered to be a rare and exotic fruit, brought to European cities as a result of cross-Atlantic trade. The scene is very much alive, with a curious salamander at right, a buzzing bee, and two butterflies.
