A Mountainous Landscape with a Waterfall

singled and dated J. G. Steffan 1871 München (lower right)

oil on canvas

canvas: 22 by 16 in.; 55.8 by 40.6 cm

framed: 28 by 22 in.; 71.1 by 55.8 cm

The following condition report is kindly provided by Simon Parkes. This painting is unlined and although the canvas is quite wavy in the upper portion, hopefully it can remain unlined. A vertical scratch or possibly a slight tear has occurred in the center right. The picture has most likely never been properly cleaned. Under ultraviolet light there are some restorations visible here and there in the darker colors which presumably address some fine cracking, blooming to the varnish or abrasion, although it seems unlikely. It would be advisable to clean the picture to ascertain the reason for this retouching, which may be misguided. Despite the fact that there are retouches, the condition of the painting is good and we would encourage a reexamination of the restoration.

Acquired by the present owner at the above sale
Born in Switzerland, Johann Gottfried Steffan moved in 1833 to Munich, where he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and the Polytechnikum. Impressed by Carl Rottmann’s Italian landscapes, Steffan decided to devote himself to landscape painting of lake and mountain scenes.
