Cesare Lapini specialised in allegorical and genre subjects and models all'antica, which he sold with great success from his Florentine workshop to an elite global clientele.
These enchanting figures of children epitomise the taste for entertaining subjects rendered with astonishing technical skill. Entitled 'Volere e potere' - 'where there's a will there is a way' - the girl is engaged in sewing, while the boy, holding a broken shard, represents autonomy - 'Chi s'aiuto dio l'aiuta' ('God will help those who help themselves').
