Description
Italian, late 19th/ early 20th century
After the Antique
Head of a Satyr
bronze, with a modern wood and metal stand
head: 26cm., 10¼in.
47cm., 18½in. overall on stand
The present head is modelled after an antique type known as the 'Resting Satyr'. The most famous of the ancient versions is a Roman copy in the Musei Capitolini, Rome (inv. no. 793), and others exist in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. E000030) and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen (inv. no. 474). The lost Greek original likely dated to the era of Praxiteles (4th century B.C.), but was not necessarily associated with the sculptor himself.
