Bust of Flora
signed: A CARRiER-BELLEUSE
white marble, on a coloured marble socle
78cm., 30¾in. overall
Overall in good condition with minor surface dirt and wear consistent with age. The surface is dry and slightly coarse in areas such as the hair and the flowers. There are reattachments to some of the petals of the flowers in the hair. There us some slight natural veining to the marble and a few small natural inclusions. A few minor dirt marks including to the lace at the proper right shoulder. There is some white fill where the bust joins the socle. A few minor chips and abrasions at the high points.
There is a loss to one of the corners of the socle.

The present model has been variously identified as Flora, or an allegory of Spring (Printemps), as it shares the latter model's deep cut eyes, pronounced chin and delicate curls which frame the face. The work can be dated to after 1868, as it bears the full signature of the artist; prior to this date he signed his works A. CARRiER.
Another marble version is housed in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no. B777).
