Description

Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath

Three items relating to Plath's correspondence:

i) Nine envelopes addressed to William and Edith Hughes, seven addressed by Ted Hughes and two typed, chiefly Northampton, MA, 1958-60

ii) Ted Hughes, autograph manuscript list of Sylvia Plath's letters to his parents, listing 17 items (16 letters and a postcard) with summary of content and approximate date, 2 pages, written on the versos of copies of a draft letter to a newspaper responding to a review of L. Wagner's biography of Plath, denying that he has discouraged his friends from giving interviews, dated 8 March 1988, A4 (297 x 210mm), 1988

iii) Ted Hughes, cream envelope labelled in Hughes's hand "S letters to me", originally containing Plath's letters to him

The letters listed in (ii) correspond to the letters by Plath to William and Edith Hughes in the current sale. The retained envelopes (i) probably originally enclosed Hughes's own letters to his parents from the same period.
