the rider stamped 'Maquette Francaise sur Armature Articulee/Brevetée S.G.D.G/Paris B Deposee' and overstamped 'Young / Gower St.', the horse stamped twice

walnut and leather

retailed by Young of Gower Street, London

height with figure 74cm. high; 2fty. 5in., stand 60cm. wide; 1ft. 11¾in.

Made in Paris in the early 20th century.

Models such as that offered here, which is of a particulalrly rare combination of female rider and horse, were sought after and expensive. The best makers were based in Paris and from where the present lot comes.

The retailer Percy Young had premises at 137 Gower St, London WC 1882-1904, then at 131 Gower St 1905-1920. Young were Publishers, importers and manufacturers of artists' materials. Their clientele included many important artists; Wiliam Orpen, Walter Sickeret, Lucien Pissaro, James McNeill Whistler and Stanley Spencer all used materials supplied by Young.
