Portrait of a girl, half-length, holding a basket with grapes and other fruit

oil on canvas, unlined

unframed: 55.8 x 46 cm.; 22 x 18⅛  in. (with an extension of 1cm. painted wood along the lower margin)

framed: 71.8 x 61.1 cm.; 28¼ x 24 in.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The canvas is unlined and is attached to what I assume is the original fixed wooden stretcher, which has diagonal cross-batons in the corners. There is evidence of repairs on the reverse of the canvas, as well as a number of small holes and inevitable stretcher bar lines. There are structural issues but it is obviously most encouraging, and rare, to find a canvas of this age in it's original unlined state.

Paint Surface

The paint surface has very discoloured varnish layers and would undoubtedly be transformed by cleaning. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms how opaque and discoloured the varnish layers have become and it is therefore difficult to accurately assess the extent of retouchings applied in the past. There may be retouchings beneath the varnish layers that I could not identify under ultraviolet light.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in essentially very good condition with minimal intervention in the past and the potential to be transformed by cleaning. It should be possible to clean, conserve and restore the painting without having to resort to lining the presently unlined canvas.
