A garland of fruit and flowers surrounding a portrait of a lady in a blue dress, holding a guitar

signed lower center: catarina ijkens. fecit

oil on oak panel

unframed: 40.6 x 27.5 cm.; 16 x 10 ⅞ in.

framed: 55.1 x 42.2 cm.; 21 ¾ x 16 ⅝ in.

The panel is uncradled and very slightly bowed. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. There is a small, very slightly raised area of paint in the upper right corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of restoration, which both comprise numerous, small retouchings scattered throughout the surface. More concentrated areas are found in the dark background around the still life within and outside the cartouche, to enhance the contrast between the background and the bright flowers and fruits. Most of the still life is well-preserved and free of restoration - there are some areas of retouching, however, in the fruits upper left and lower left. Fine lines of retouching are found through the network of craquelure in the lady's face and chest, and in the right side of her dress. This restoration had all been carried out sensitively, and the painting is ready to hang and presents well in its current state.
