Christo and I are our own grandfathers in the sense that we made the transition from Eastern to Western men abruptly, in a period that otherwise might have taken generations. I admire Christo as a artist who invented himself. He not only invented himself; he invented his art, and, even more amazing, he invented his public.

Christo et moi-même sommes nos propres ancêtres au sens où nous, hommes de l’Est, nous sommes intégrés à la culture occidentale très rapidement, une transition qui aurait du prendre autrement des générations. J’admire Christo en tant qu’artiste qui s’est inventé seul. Il s’est non seulement inventé lui-même, mais il a aussi inventé son art, et encore plus étonnement, il a su inventer son publique.
