The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:

This work has not been recently restored. The canvas has a lining applied with wax. There are areas of instability in the upper right of the sky, and to the right of the figure with the yellow headdress. To the right of the green clothing in the center of the work, there is a quarter inch square area of a non-original substance that could easily be removed.

Some of the retouching shows strongly under ultraviolet light, but others are beneath an opaque varnish. There is a retouching in the sky to the right of the yellow headdress, some retouches in the upper right, and others in the upper left. There appears to be a restored damage of about 3 by 2 inches in the chest of the central figure with the red headdress, which is not visible under ultraviolet light but is visible to the naked eye. There are restorations in the pink color in the lower left quadrant, above and to the right of the sandaled foot. Further retouching would probably become apparent if the work is cleaned.

The condition seems to be respectable overall, and the work would respond well to restoration.
