The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:

This work is painted on board. The top edge and the left and right sides are uneven, but this is original to the board and was in place when the work was created. The paint layer is stable and shows no signs of instability or damage. There is a very slightly sepia tone over the blue background, which is original. The work should be hung in its current state.

According to Dr. Henry Adams, the present work "fits well with Benton's portrait studies of about 1928 . . . the painting is based on a series of sketches of African-American cotton pickers that Benton made in Georgia, probably during his cross-country sketching tour of 1928." He continues, "the brushwork of the painting has a somewhat rough but highly intelligent and purposeful character . . . It has the sweeping quality of rhythmically related forms that are characteristic of Benton's style."
