This portrait in profile bears a strong resemblance to Joseph Stella’s Portrait of Samuel Putnam (Private collection). An American editor, publisher and author, Putnam was a frequent contributor to newspapers such as The Chicago Tribune, Evening Post and the Daily Worker. He later gained widespread recognition as a prolific literary translator and an expert on the literature of Brazil.
