The following condition report has been provided by Tatti Art Conservation, New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:

The above piece is in overall excellent condition in both appearance and structural integrity. The brown patina presents well with little wear on traditional handling points, such as the hands and the edges of the base. The current protective wax coating on the surface appears to be holding up well and the work has an overall soft buff. Recently, the shovel within the figure's hand was straightened and the shovelhead was reattached. It should be noted that the underside of this work has been painted with a high gloss gold paint.
