We wish to thank Dr. Ila Weiss, the leading Sanford Robinson Gifford scholar, for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:

This work is in good condition. The canvas is unlined. The tacking edges have been reinforced in order to safely stretch the canvas. The paint layer is clean, varnished and retouched. Almost all the retouches are in the sky. The landscape and the ruins are unretouched, despite some of the original color reading strongly under ultraviolet light. On the reverse there is a small repair addressing a loss in the shrubbery in the top of the archway on the far left and there is a small amount of retouching to the surface here. Some discoloration had developed in the sky on the right, which is common in Luminist pictures. The vertical stains have been greatly reduced with the placement of small and accurate retouching. There is a slightly more visible group of restorations in the upper right quadrant. There are a few others directly above the castle on the top of the archway. The work looks well and should be hung as is.
