Private collection
By descent to the present owner, circa 1989
The present work captures the intense moment of restarting the play in rugby football, called scrummage, scrum for short. With dust kicking up in all directions, Barnes practically throws the viewer into the group of athletes as they attempt to gain possession of the ball.
