The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:
This painting is lined with wax as the adhesive and stretched onto a non-original stretcher. The paint layer is stable and free of surface dirt. There have been a few campaigns of restoration over time. Under ultraviolet light, there are several small areas of restoration throughout the sky addressing thin cracks and areas where the paint layer was slightly abraded. A few of these restorations into the horizon line and distant landscape. Older restorations are difficult to identify in the foreground under ultraviolet light, due to an old varnish. There are about a dozen small recent restorations throughout the foreground addressing minor cracks and abrasions. There are also small restorations along all four edges addressing minor frame abrasions. This painting can be hung in its current state.
