signed J.F. Cropsey (lower right)

oil on canvas

canvas: 18 by 28 inches (45.7 by 71 cm)

framed: 27 by 37 inches (68.6 by 94 cm)

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:

This work is in very good condition. The canvas is lined with wax as an adhesive and stretched on a heavy stretcher. The paint layer is clean. There are a few retouches around the extreme edges in the sky, addressing some frame abrasion. There is a thin diagonal restoration of about 2 inches in the center-left sky, and one backward C-shaped restoration of about half an inch in the center of the sky. There is none of the staining, abrasion, or discoloration that is often seen in Cropsey's work.
