A pair of large wucai 'immortals' jars and covers
Transitional period, circa 1640's
each of baluster form, rising from a flared base to a broad shouldered body, waisted neck and a slightly lipped rim, painted in bright enamels with Xiwangmu and attendants amidst a garden filled with rocks and leafy trees, the domed cover surmounted by a lotus bud finial
Height 48.5 cm. 19 in.
The one jar has a circa 25 cm., wide crescent-shaped area of over-painting to the shoulder and neck and to a circa 14cm., wide crescent-shaped section of the neck; the other jar has over-painting encircling most of the lower half of the body, fritting and loss to the glaze at the rim and two shallow flakes (8 and 1mm) to the rim; the covers have some minor fritting and one has a 6mm., wide shallow flake.
