Herbert Ponting

Three original photographs of ski shoes, published in 'Scott’s Last Expedition', 1913

3 gelatin silver prints (127 x 178mm.)

The photographs comprise: Finnesko; Ski Shoes for use with Finnesko (devised by Lt. Gran and made by P.O. Evans); and Finnesko with crampons.

These photographs are three of the four published plates illustrated in Scott's Last Expedition (edited by L. Huxley, London, 1913), facing page 338: "Saturday, July 1, 1911 ... we have designed new ski boots and I think they are going to be a success. My object is to stick to the Huitfeldt binding for sledging if possible. One must wear finnesko on the barrier, and with finnesko alone a binding is necessary. ... Evans, P.O., has risen well to the occasion as a boot maker".
