Folio (345 x 250mm.), approximately 166 photographs (various sizes from 50 x 75mm. to 175 x 250mm., or the reverse; 15 are large (mostly military groups), many are postcard size), mounted on paper, recto and verso, nearly all with contemporary ink captions on the mount, contemporary half roan, green cloth boards, upper cover stamped in gilt 'Photographs', brittle mounts browned and chipped, some tears and wear, some images fading, binding lacking backstrip, binding rubbed


This album, including rare photographs of China, was compiled by a British officer during military service in northern China, Hong Kong, Japan, Crete, Malta and India at the end of the 19th- and early 20th-century. The album contains a number of military group photographs and individual portraits of both local people and soldiers, including c.65 photographs of scenes in northern China, including Tientsen (modern day Tianjin), Beijing, and Shan-hai-kwan (Shanhaiguan), together with c.20 of Hong Kong, and a few taken in Crete, Malta and India.


PROVENANCE:

F.J. Roberts, small ink ownership stamp on upper pastedown and verso of preliminary free endpaper; thence by family descent to the present owner
