FIRST EDITION, small 4to (200 x 160mm.), PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author on preliminary free endpaper to "E. Maud Robinson from Annie Brassey, March 1st 1873", half-title, albumen print photograph portrait of the author, folding lithographed map showing the route of the cruise, 36 small albumen print photographs by the author mounted on 31 leaves, one lithographed plate, original blue cloth, upper cover with gilt vignette of the ship "Eothen", flat spine titled in gilt, gilt edges, half-title browned with offsetting of inscription, binding dampstained and slightly worn 


This uncommon work describes a cruise to Canada and the United States in 1872. Lady Brassey was an accomplished photographer and in 1873 became a member of the Photographic Society of London and exhibited photographs in 1873 and 1886.


Brassey dedicated this book to "Our friends in America, in grateful remembrance of their hospitality during our visit there" and adds "The photography being my own handiwork, will, I trust, add an additional interest to them. A.B." The photographs include portraits of friends and family and fellow passengers, together with views or people in Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara, Pictou, Halifax, Boston, New York and Washington.
