Both canvases are lined and the paint surfaces of each are clean with a clear varnish. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the very good state of preservation of both canvases. Each contains minor retouching to parts of the craquelure in the fore and middle grounds. The former has retouching to a vertical scratch in the centre of the sky (6cm long) and a slightly more concentrated areas 4cm long in the centre of the margin. These are all sensitively executed and not apparent to the naked eye. The paintings present very well. The latter has three slightly more concentrated areas of retouching in the sky, none of which measure more than 6cm, and a small patch 2 x 2cm in the bank to the left of the bridge.
