Description
Flemish School, 17th Century
Portrait of a falconer, the Amsterdam Gate in Haarlem in the distance
oil on canvas
187 x 98 cm.; 73⅝ x 38½ in.
The design of this intriguing portrait mirrors that found in an engraving given to Theodor Van Thulden in the British Museum.1 While the colouring and handling would suggest a Flemish artist, the structure in the background can easily be identified as the Amsterdam Gate in Haarlem.
An attribution to Louis Cousin known as Luigi Primo has kindly been proposed by Dr Lara Yeager-Crasselt.
