Description

An Italian patinated bronze tripod table, possibly cast by Fonderia Chiurazzi,

circa 1900

corresponding with model no. 458 from the Chiurazzi Workshop Catalogue (Società anonima, fonderie, ceramica, marmeria, Napoli, 1929, p.215)

41cm. high, 40cm. wide; 1ft. 4⅛in., 1ft. 3¾in.

The antique model after which the design of the present table is based was found in Pompeii and is now in the collections of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Naples.

From the 1860s, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Naples began granting permits for the official production of copies of their collection of sculptures. A variety of Neapolitan firms like the Chiurazzi foundry quickly saw the opportunity to capitalize on the flourishing interest of public institutions as well as private collectors who were eager buyers of such replicas during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Chiurazzi foundry was established by the sculptor Gennaro Chiurazzi (1846-1906) in Naples around 1870 and specialized in casting replicas of antique models. Their 1929 catalogue include reproductions of statues, armour, mosaics and vessels from the Naples Museum, as well as of famous sculptures from other renowned European museums. It is known that their bronzes were cast using the lost wax method and were given a variety of patinas to imitate the antique.
