Description

After Giambologna (1529-1608)

Italian, Florence, early 17th century

Woman bathing, kneeling and looking up

bronze

10 cm., 3⅞in.

This delicate bronze follows a model by Giambologna presumed by Avery (op. cit.) to have been conceived as early as the 1550s. Based on ancient prototypes of the crouching Venus, the model is likely to represent a nymph interrupted at her bath by a satyr, who may have formed a pendant to this composition. An early cast of the model is in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence.
