17th-Century Follower of Nicolas Poussin

A 17th-century copy after the painting of 1627 by Nicolas Poussin, commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Barberini and in the possession of that family until it was acquired in 1958 by the Minneapolis Institute of Art (inv. no. 58.28).¹This composition was Poussin's first major history painting. It depicts the moment when Germanicus, a young Roman general, lies on his deathbed and injuncts his friends and wife to avenge his murder, having been poisoned by his jealous adoptive father, the emperor Tiberius.
