Description

After Adriaen de Vries (1556–1626)

Italian, 18th century

Reclining Nymph

bronze, on a mottled pink marble base

bronze: 15 by 31 cm., 6 by 12¼ in.

base: 4.5 by 28.5 cm., 1¾ by 11¼ in.

This elegant reclining female nude relates to Giambologna's well-known model of a Sleeping Nymph, but the woman's pose seems ultimately derived from the figure of Ariadne in a bronze relief by Adriaen de Vries in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. BK-14692).
