Description

A Charles II carved oak panel-back armchair, West Yorkshire

possibly Leeds, circa 1660

with a shaped cresting rail and a field of raised stylised foliage to the back panel, later turned front feet and re-tipped rear feet

For an armchair dated 1661 with very similar relief carved detail see that illustrated by Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p. 432. Chinnery gives this chair and another to a Leeds based craftsman upon comparison with the foliate-carved lower panels of a rood screen from 1634 at St John's Church, Leeds. For a further very similar armchair given more generally to South-West Yorkshire, see Chinnery, op. cit., p. 435.
