An Etchu tachi

Attributed to Norishige

Late Kamakura - early Nanbokucho period, 14th century


Sugata [configuration]: Shinogi-zukuriiori-munetori-zori, chu-kissaki with futatsujibi to both sides

Kitae [forging pattern]: Ko-mokume hada

Hamon [tempering pattern]: Irregular gunome midare with extensive sunagashi and nioi

Boshi [tip]: The boshi is maru

Nakago [tang]: Osuriagekiri-jiri, with two mekugi-ana, the omote with signature Norishige and kao, the ura titled Fubuki [Snowstorm] in gold inlay 

Habaki [collar]: Gold clad 

In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard], accompanied by two further shirasaya with sayagaki

Nagasa [length from kissaki to machi]: 75 cm., 29½ in. 

Saki-haba [width at the yokote]: 2.2 cm., ⅞ in.

Moto-haba [width at the machi]: 3.4 cm., 1⅜ in. 


Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu Hozon Token [Sword Especially Worthy of Preserving], no. 100892 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Showa 60 (1985).

Accompanied by an origami attestation by Hon'ami Tadaaki, a kofuda by Hon'ami Shichirobei, Hon'ami Saburobei, and three others, with further accompanying letters by Hon'ami Tadaaki and Hon'ami Tadamasa, and a poem by Saito Soho, daimyo of Nishikawa Jiri in Omi Province written circa 1558.
