Signed Yashu ju Hosokawa Masanori saku (made by Hosokawa Masanori from Shimotsuke Province)

Meiji period, dated Meiji yonen sangatsu hi (a day in March, 1881)

the single blade yari mounted in a lacquer shaft decorated overall with a dense nashiji ground, the yari-saya with mon above scrolling foliage in gold hiramaki-e, the silver fittings chased and engraved with further mon and scrolls, pierced with inome [boar's eye] openings, the cover similarly decorated and mounted with engraved and chased silver mounts, 89 cm., 35 in. long 

Nagasa [length from kissaki to machi]: 11.2 cm., 4⅜ in.

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Hozon Token [Sword Worthy of Preserving], no. 3023424 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Reiwa 2 (2020).
