German artist Charles Hoguet trained in his native Berlin with marine painter Wilhelm Krause. He continued his artistic training in Paris where he painted the present work. The lively scene shows the hustle and bustle of the market at Les Halles. The composition is especially striking for its vibrant colour and in its concentration of almost all of the activity in the lowest section of the painting.
