Paul Giraud painted scenes of Parisian life before emigrating to the United States in 1887. It was in Dallas, Texas, that Giraud produced his bird's-eye view of the city, a highly detailed and schematic print in which he documented the patchwork of streets, railroads and rivers that made up the city, as well as projecting plans for improvements.

The present work, predating the artist's relocation to Texas, alludes to a prolonged interest in city life and reflects the impressionistic style of the period.
