First edition. "Frémont's first expedition to the Rockies was designed by his father-in-law, Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, to publicize the overland route to Oregon" (Wagner-Camp-Becker 95). Though this route was well known to fur traders at the time, it was still outside the general public's knowledge.
