Prayer in the Mosque, Cairo

signed and dated F. A. Bridgman / 1876 lower right

oil on canvas

Unframed: 82.5 by 117cm., 32½ by 46in.

Framed: 122 by 156cm., 48 by 61½in.

The painting has been relined and is on a new modern stretcher. It presents well but there are some old restorations visible under ultra violet light, notably a 20cm vertical area of inpainting in the base of the arch addressing what appears to be an old tear; and another 15 cm vertical area of inpainting in the upper left window, also addressing an old tear; and a 10cm vertical line of inpainting in the straightened arm of the kneeling figure with the leopard skin, probably also addressing an old tear. There are other scattered retouches in the background, along the frame edges and in the cloak of the prostrate figure (lower left). The signature appears to have been strengthened. However, overall the figures, and in particular the faces, are in untouched condition.
