signed and dated J.L GÉRÔME. / 1858 lower left

oil on canvas

Unframed: 34.5 by 25cm., 13¼ by 9¾in.

Framed: 56 by 46cm., 22 by 18in.

We are grateful to Dr Emily M. Weeks for her assistance in cataloguing this work which will be included in her revision of the artist's catalogue raisonné by Gerald M. Ackerman.

The canvas has not been lined and is providing a strong and stable support to the paint surface. There is a wooden casing covering the overlap. There is an area of fine craquelure to the figure's robes. There is some minor rubbing to the extreme framing edges. There is an uneven slightly dirty surface varnish and some specks of surface dirt. There is a surface scratch to the lower edge, to the right of the shoe. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to the framing edges. Some fine scattered flecks of retouching to the right side of the figure's face and neck, some flecks to the belt and outer robe, to the carpet and a few flecks elsewhere. Otherwise the work is in good condition, ready to hang.
