The present work appears to be an oil sketch for a larger painting with the same title, formerly in the Najd collection. It has been suggested by Caroline Juler that the craftsman portrayed perhaps copied traditional designs from Mamluk metalwork to sell to visitors from Europe and America. The urn depicted in this painting appears in other works by Ernst and was therefore probably owned by him.
