This condition report has been prepared by Hamish Dewar Ltd.

The artist's panel is structurally sound with very slight bowing. The paint surface has a loss on the lower horizontal edge and another in the upper left corner where shards of the artist's gesso preparation have become detached. There is also some minor flaking on the upper horizontal edge and fine lines of stable drying craquelure in the darker shadows above and around the arch behind the seated man. The areas of loss could be locally secured, filled and retouched and this would be a straightforward process. I could find no evidence of retouching under ultraviolet light. The painting would undoubtedly respond very well to cleaning and the application of a thin matt varnish. The painting is in essentially very good condition with no evidence of any intervention in the past. The losses that have occurred in the past are fortunately limited to the outer edges of the composition and could be resolved by minimal retouching. Very gently cleaning and revarnishing should result in a transformation in the overall appearance.
