2016
In 2016 Nike debuted the Air Jordan 31, a modern reimagining and homage to the iconic Air Jordan I, released 31 years prior. Designed with a mix of classic silhouettes and modern material, the Jordan 31 was worn by basketball players world-wide, including then-Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook. This offered player exclusive Air Jordan 31 was likely created for Westbrook’s use at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Westbrook, one of basketball’s most electrifying players, is not only a longtime Jordan Brand athlete and NBA All-Star, he also stands as an Olympic Champion. Making his debut at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Westbrook would join Team USA and win the Gold. Finishing strong, Westbrook played in all eight winning games and averaged 8.5 points per game. Though Westbrook opted not to play on the Gold-winning Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games, later that year he would lead the NBA in points scored, achieving a career high of 31.6 average points, and would win All-Star MVP.
In celebration of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Nike created a series of Air Jordan XXXI player exclusive colorways that represented the nations of competing Jordan Olympic athletes around the world. Team USA featured patriotic red, white and blue.
Notably, The Air Jordan 31 design marked the first time both the Air Jordan Jumpman and Swoosh logos were featured on a sneaker. These sneakers also have a design motif for the Olympic Games in Brazil on the interior side of the lather tongue tag.
