This is a fine example of one of Ollivier’s drawings in trois crayons, a combination famously used a generation earlier by Antoine Watteau (1684 – 1721). Here, the artist depicts an elegantly dressed young woman, seated and holding a fan, where her outfit is as much the protagonist as the sitter herself. Ollivier has highlighted the sumptuous folds and creases created by the rich satin material, all enhanced by the variety of chalks employed.

Michel Barthélémy Ollivier began his career under the tutelage of the painter Carle van Loo, before traveling to Spain in 1734 with Van Loo’s nephew, Louis-Michel, who had been appointed court painter to King Philip V that same year. Upon his return to France in 1763 he joined the Académie de Saint Luc, Paris, where he exhibited a portrait of his wife in 1764. In 1766 he was made official painter of Louis François I, Prince of Conti (1716-1776).

The Goncourt brothers owned four drawings by Ollivier, all of women (lots 212-215 in their sale).
