The view of the Old Lutheran Church seen from the Singel depicts the so-called boerenverdriet. The name dates from the 16th century, when the passage between the Spui and the Singel was locked off during a certain time of the day. The farmers, bringing their merchandise by boat, were often forced to wait several hours before they could go through, hence the name boerenverdriet (farmer's sorrow). The scene recurs in the works of many of the famous 18th-century topographical painters, for example the painting by Jan Ekels I in the collection of the Rijksmuseum (on loan to the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, see Comparative literature, Van Thiel et al.) and the drawing by Jan de Beijer (see Comparative literature, Romers).

The Old Lutheran Church (Oude Lutherse Kerk) was built in 1632-1633 and was consacrated on Christmas day 1633. It has four entrances: one on the Singel, two on the Spui and one in the Handboogsteeg (see Comparative literature, Van der Aa).

The present painting is registered at the Dutch Institute for Art History RKD, The Hague, under record n° 106916.

La vue de l’ancienne église luthérienne depuis le Singel dépeint une scène nommée boerenverdriet. L’origine du mot remonte au XVI^e siècle : lorsque le passage entre le Spui et le Singel était fermé pendant une partie de la journée, les fermiers ramenant leur marchandise par voie fluviale, étaient souvent contraints de patienter plusieurs heures avant de pouvoir emprunter le passage, d’où le nom boerenverdriet (chagrin du fermier). La scène est récurrente dans les œuvres de nombreux peintres de vues topographiques célèbres au XVIII^e siècle, notamment dans le tableau de Jan Ekels I, conservé au Rijksmuseum (actuellement en dépôt au Amsterdams Historisch Museum, voir Van Thiel et al. dans la bibliographie comparative), et dans le dessin de Jan de Beijer (voir Romers, dans la bibliographie comparative).

L’ancienne église luthérienne (Oude Lutherse Kerk) fut construite en 1632-1633 et consacrée le jour de Noël, en 1633. Elle compte quatre entrées : l’une d’elles donne sur le Singel, deux autres sur le Spui et une dans la rue Handboogsteeg (voir Van der Aa, dans la bibliographie comparative).
