Description

Seed pearl and enamel brooch

1890s

the memorial brooch of rosette design, centring on the name 'Liko' in white enamel, against a blue basse-taille enamel background, framed by a border of half-pearls, the reverse with an enamel miniature of Prince Henry of Battenberg above the inscribed date 'Jan 20th 1896'

A gift from Princess Patricia of Connaught (1886–1974) to her goddaughter Patricia, Lady Mountbatten, Countess of Burma.
Prince Henry of Battenberg (1858-1896), known as 'Liko' to his family, was the husband of Queen Victoria's youngest daughter Beatrice. The Queen allowed the marriage on the condition that the couple lived with her. The condition was accepted with Prince Henry taking up appointments as governor and captain general of the Isle of Wight and governor of Carisbrooke Castle, however he died aged 37, after contracting malaria whilst serving as the military secretary to the commander-in-chief of the British forces, in the Anglo-Ashanti War in West Africa.
